IDAHO’S TRANSPORTATION ‘PIVOT POINT’ IS FOCUS OF FORUM FEATURING NATIONAL LEADER

Infrastructure’s role in economic recovery and sustainability will highlight ULI forum at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho – Idaho experts and a national leader will convene May 14 for a regionally important transportation infrastructure discussion -- Infrastructure 2009 Pivot Point – being presented by Urban Land Institute and Ernst & Young.

Insights from Infrastructure 2009 Pivot Point, a new publication from Urban Land Institute and Ernst & Young, will be presented by ULI worldwide transportation fellow Robert Dunphy and provide the background for a discussion of the Treasure Valley’s transportation pivot point, the rail corridor linking Boise and western Treasure Valley.

Idaho experts from higher education, local government, and real estate development will focus on the regional issues in the forum, scheduled from 8-11 a.m. at Boise State University’s new Student Union Building Grand Ballroom.

Robert Dunphy is the senior resident fellow for transportation at Washington, D.C.-based Urban Land Institute. He is a widely quoted expert on transportation issues in urban centers.

Local experts discussing the “transportation pivot point” in the Treasure Valley, the high-capacity transit corridor from Boise to Caldwell:

• Mark Warner, vice president and general manager of MotivePower, a Boise-based manufacturer and remanufacturer of railroad and transit equipment that has rail and transit clients throughout North America.

• Rob Hopper, a Hewlett-Packard manager, member of the Caldwell City Council, and board member of Valley Regional Transit

• Boise State University professor Dr. Stefanie Witt, Chair of the Department of Public Policy and Administration, Director, Public Policy Center and Internship Program Professor, Department of Public Policy & Administration

• Idaho-based regional real estate developer Dennis Baker, owner of extensive property in Meridian that has frontage along a planned rail corridor linking Caldwell and Boise.

• Jeff Jackson, Senior Vice-president and Chief Operating Officer, American Heritage Railroad

The event is being offered by the Boise State University Department of Public Policy and Administration, Community and Regional Planning Program and the ULI Idaho District Council. Sponsors of the event include Stoel Rives, LLP, HDR, Parametrix and COMPASS.

“As Idaho elected officials formulate long-term responses to the economy’s need for functional transportation infrastructure to help build Idaho’s economic future, we believe the expertise of this panel is especially timely,” said Bob Taunton, chairman of the Urban Land Institute’s Idaho-Montana District Council. “Clearly, finding solutions that work now and can be refined to be effective in the future is the challenge.”

Among the materials available to attendees is the ULI / Ernst & Young Infrastructure Report 2009, a comprehensive analysis of transportation solutions nationwide.

All ULI members and the public are invited. Urban Land Institute members can attend for $25, and non-members $35. Elected officials and members of media can attend free of charge. Registration deadline is Monday, May 11.
