BOISE, Idaho – According to data provided by Nielsen Media Research, the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl recorded the biggest increase in viewership among all 2008-09 college football bowl telecasts. The 12th Annual Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl, played in Boise, Idaho, had a viewer increase of 217% from 2007. This increase was more than double any other bowl game and the greatest increase out of all 32 bowl games.
The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl featured Maryland of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) against the Western Athletic Conference’s University of Nevada. Maryland beat Nevada 42-35.
“I believe the increase in television viewers can be contributed to the outstanding match-up of the two teams that played in the Humanitarian Bowl and the great draw of the Washington D.C. and Maryland television markets” said Kevin McDonald, executive director of the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl.
Eighteen of the bowls increased TV viewership from last year. Viewership of the five Bowl Championship Series games increased by 7%, according to data provided by Nielsen Media Research. The Hawaii Bowl had an increase of 100%, which was the second greatest increase of the 2008-09 season.
The 12th Annual Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl was aired on ESPN’s flagship network and was the only bowl game on television during it’s time slot. Maryland was the sixth different ACC team to play in the game, joining Georgia Tech (twice), Miami, Boston College, Virginia and Clemson.
The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl is the only bowl game in the United States that has humanity in its brand. The brand recognizes the positive impact teams, coaches and student-athletes have in their communities and their leadership roles in promoting humanitarian efforts.
