First-Ever Meeting to Pair Resurgent Programs with High-Power Aerial Attacks
BOISE, Idaho – The University of Idaho Vandals (7-5) from the Western Athletic Conference and Bowling Green State University Falcons (7-5) from the Mid-American Conference have accepted invitations to compete in the 2009 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 2:30 p.m. MST in 34,000-seat Bronco Stadium and will be televised nationally on ESPN. It will be the first match-up of the two teams that have turned around their programs. Idaho will be making its first bowl appearance since the 1998 Humanitarian Bowl while Bowling Green will be competing in its second bowl in three years after consecutive berths in 2003 and 2004.
Both teams rank among the leaders nationally in passing offense - Bowling Green is ranked eighth (310 yards per game) and Idaho is ranked eleventh (290 yards per game) - which will add to the history of exciting finishes in the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl. Since its inception in 1997, the Bowl has had an average score of 38-25, delivering an exciting experience for players and fans.
Bowling Green and Idaho feature several players in contention for national awards and projected for NFL careers. Bowling Green’s Freddie Barnes is the nation’s leader in receptions per game (11.5) and is five receptions short of breaking the NCAA FBS single-season receiving record of 142. The Falcons’ senior quarterback, Tyler Sheehan, is the school’s all-time leader in pass completions (914) and is fifth in the nation in passing yards (305.3). Idaho is led by junior quarterback, Nathan Enderle who ranks seventh in the nation in pass efficiency with a 155.8 rating and 17th in passing yards per game (266.6). Enderle is protected by All-American senior guard Mike Iupati, a finalist for the Outland Trophy for college football’s most outstanding interior lineman.
“We’re delighted to have two highly-respected, well-coached teams represented in the Bowl,” said Kevin McDonald, executive director, Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl. “Both teams have shown the propensity to light up the scoreboard with a high-powered passing attack which should appeal to a national audience that is accustomed to excitement in the Bowl.”
The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl is the only bowl game in the United States that has humanity in its brand. The Bowl recognizes the positive impact teams, coaches and student-athletes have in their communities
and their leadership roles in promoting humanitarian efforts.
