Former Pittsburgh Steelers Running Back to Share Inspirational Story of Perseverance
BOISE, Idaho – The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl today announced that Rocky Bleier, Vietnam veteran and four-time Super Bowl champion, will give the keynote presentation at the U.S. Bank Humanitarian Awards Dinner on Monday, Dec. 28th at 7:00 p.m. at the Boise Centre. The annual dinner will honor one player from each of the teams participating in the 2009 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl - Bowling Green State University and the University of Idaho - for exemplary humanitarian efforts, academics and performance on the field.
After a national championship with Notre Dame and a 1968 rookie season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bleier was drafted into the U.S. Army, sent to Vietnam and overcame a serious combat injury to his right leg and a two-year rehabilitation to regain a spot on the Steelers’ roster. Bleier went on to win four Super Bowls as a member of the Steelers and retired after the 1980 season with 3,865 career rushing yards and 25 touchdowns.
“Rocky is an excellent motivational speaker with a compelling message of how ordinary people can overcome obstacles to become extraordinary achievers,” said Kevin McDonald, executive director of the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl. “His message resonates with people of all ages, athletes and non-athletes alike.”
The U.S. Bank Humanitarian Awards Dinner, coordinated in association with the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame, is open to the public and features players and coaches from both Bowl teams. Tickets are limited, cost $50.00 each and are available until Dec. 23rd by calling the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl office at ph: (208) 424-1011. No tickets will be available at the door.
The Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl is the only bowl game in the United States that has humanity in its brand. The Bowl recognizes the positive impact teams, coaches and student-athletes have in their communities
and their leadership roles in promoting humanitarian efforts.
