URBAN LAND INSTITUTE TO ISSUE SUSTAINABLE DOWNTOWNS RECOMMENDATIONS TO REGION’S CITIES

BOISE, ID -- Recommended steps that are applicable to each of six community downtowns will be the focus of the second annual Urban Land Institute's Mayor's Forum on creating sustainable town and city centers in the Treasure Valley June 10. The public is invited to attend the 9 a.m. event at Boise City Hall, City Council chambers, 3rd floor. Admission for the breakfast lunch event is $30, with discounts for ULI members and public sector officials. A copy of the Urban Land Institute Sustainable Downtown Development and Idaho’s Treasure Valley will be included with registration. The Mayor's Forum is the result of a nearly year-long effort by a specialized working group of Urban Land Institute members, public officials and community leaders that included highly detailed interviews, consultations and recommendations by ULI global experts. Boise-based developer Mark Rivers and Dr. Jim Weatherby, retired chair of the Boise State University School of Public Policy, will moderate panel discussions at the Mayor’s Forum. Questions can be posed by any forum attendee during the panel discussions. In the first panel, team leaders of ULI will discuss recommendations for Treasure Valley cities. Then, a panel of Treasure Valley mayors, scheduled to include Tammy de Weerd of Meridian, Tom Dale of Nampa, Nate Mitchell of Star and either Dave Bieter of Boise or a member of the city council, will respond to the recommendations in a panel. “Urban Land Institute has made a decades-long practice of identifying and spreading best practices, and now the best examples of downtown areas worldwide have been customized for adoption by many Treasure Valley cities,” said Ed Miller, co-chair of Urban Land Institute’s panel of Idaho experts who have helped shape ULI recommendations to fit 21st century realities in Treasure Valley cities. “We hope mayors and city councils of the Treasure Valley, who have played such a central role in refining these recommendations, will now adopt them and help their downtowns thrive.” ULI Idaho panelists who will join Miller on the forum panel: • JoAnn Butler (implementation), co-founder of the Boise-based law firm Spink Butler & Clapp, LLP • Derick O’Neill (market), developer of Boise new urban success story Bown Crossing • Gary Allen (development strategies), Miller’s partner at Boise-based real estate law specialist Givens Pursley • Craig Slocum (planning & design), shareholder at Boise-based CSHQA. Participating cities include Boise, Garden City, Meridian, Eagle, Star and Nampa.
